Kula Shofukuji Shingon Obon Festival
RB, King Kekaulike, D22M
On August 26th, our club had the opportunity to help out at the Kula Shofukuji Shingon Obon festival. This event has become something that we try to do annually. Because members have the opportunity to not only get some good service hours at the beginning of the school year and have a good time doing so, connecting with the community was also an opportunity for members which was extremely important after the destructive Maui wildfires. Members volunteered at the festival from about 2:30 to 10 PM and it was amazing to see all the smiling faces and the amount of people we had in comparison to last year who attended the dance. While volunteering members could choose to volunteer at a couple of different stations. First, there was the baked goods and oddities booth where remembers helped set up and then sell items to people who were hanging out for the festival. Then there was helping prepare food to sell down at the bottom. Finally, there was helping to sell and run food between the people at the back and the people at the front. Overall members seemed to have an excellent time and it is always wonderful to see how much it matters that we are able to be there and help out because they need the extra support while running the festival.
Soaking In September
EH, West Ranch, D16N
Although we are soaking in September, our division had a definitely notable DCM in late August! It was a nostalgic baby-themed event with activities consisting of a competitive game of musical chairs, rainbow loom, coloring for a service project, cup-stacking, and more! It was a DCM worth remembering!
West Ranch Key Club has also started our involvement with Atria for this new term. Atria is a Senior living center in Santa Clarita that strives to provide a comfortable, active, and social experience for the seniors living there. Volunteers will contribute through many roles such as performing a talent for the seniors, assisting with specific activities, visiting residents, providing services, participating in or leading educational or religious services, and assisting with clerical functions.
Our division has lots of exciting events coming up. First, on September 15th, a fundraiser will be held at Gong Cha with the proceeds going towards PTP. PTP is a charity seeking to reduce the amount of children's deaths caused by pediatric trauma. Make sure to show your support by getting boba on this day! Next, on September 30th is our annual Region Training Conference for Key Club officers. It will be held at Burbank High School with an admissions fee of 5$. The Key Club officers are excited to participate in this fun Avenger themed event!
Region 8 Olympics
CU, California Academy of Mathematics and Science, D19N
Toward the end of August, CAMS Key Club participated in the Region 8 Battle Til’ Sundown! All five divisions of Region 8 attended and random teams were assigned to help strengthen the bond in our region. The teams competed in various competitions such as water sponge tossing, sand castle building, and volleyball. We later took beautiful sunset photos with the division and entire region. Different clubs fundraised at the event by selling food and drinks, and there was also a jar for each division in which the one with the most money at the end of the night would have their Lieutenant Governor soaked with water balloons. Division 19 North was victorious in getting our LTG Kaycee Daez pelted with water balloons!
KIWIN'S Teens of Service
LL, Alexander Hamilton, D13W
On Saturday, September 2, 2023, Key Club and KIWIN'S Teens of Service collaborated to host a Teen Beach themed service and social event at Earvin “Magic” Johnson Recreation Center. Our own Key Club made and sold tuna onigiri at the event as well, complete with a custom poster by Lana Reyes (one of our past members). Almost all of our officers and some of our members joined other Hedgehogs and KIWIN'S in participating in fun icebreakers at the beginning of our event as well as a small competition where clubs were split off into groups to perform a short musical number! The winner was awarded the materials to make bracelets for children in hospitals. The rest of the attendees received drawing materials and cards to donate as well. The day was wrapped up with some karaoke, and the bracelets, cards, and drawings were safely collected!
