Summer Picnic

Description: "The Annual Picnic and Holiday Party utilize hundreds of volunteers to create wonderful memories for children and families in foster care. Individuals or groups can participate in a host of activities in the planning and implementation of these events and others. The Annual Summer Picnic at Wet ‘n’ Wild provides an opportunity for more than 1,000 foster children and families to play, share, and talk story. The fun-packed day includes talented entertainment, exciting games and activities, a delicious lunch, lots of prizes and giveaways…and of course water rides. The summer picnic is one of the ways that Family Programs Hawai`i extends a warm Mahalo to families who welcome foster children into their homes. Over 200 volunteers give of their time to ensure the picnic is a great success.

Roll Up Your Sleeves

Description: "IHS operates as a Honolulu based human services agency which offers a spectrum of programs dedicated to ending homelessness on Oahu. IHS' doors are open 24 hour hours a day, 365 days a year. In memory and celebration of our founder, Fr. Claude Du Teil, IHS will be spending a day giving back to the community through a volunteer work day. From start to finish, they will be constructing an urban garden. This labor intensive project will include building plant beds, mulching, weed whacking, building a water system and cleaning rubbish from area. Please help them get a garden started by bringing a plant that can tolerate full sun! All ages are welcomed, children must be supervised. Lunch and snacks will be provided.
Please wear long sleeved shirts, long pants & hats to protect against sun. Please bring your own gardening gloves. Thay are looking for people to bring weed whackers and gardening tools as well."

Be the scientist! Through hands-on science stations, families will make fascinating discoveries about Hawai'i's ecology, biology, geology, oceanography and anthropology! Act as a biologist to conduct a survey of a stream habitat, "dig" to uncover traditional Hawaiian artifacts that were used for tasks in Hawaiian households of old, and much more. Must enjoy working with the public, especially children and families. Displays an interest in Sciences or would like to learn more about it.

We are looking for several Volunteer Docents (tour guides) for our 2
nd Grade Education Program, which will start in September and run through April/May. The commitment we are looking for is 2.5 hours per week, Tuesdays and/or Thursdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Groups of 10 students with an adult chaperone will be guided through the museum by the docent(s) at 20 minute intervals. Each docent will conduct three 20 minute tours. Experience with elementary school students and plantation camp roots or sugar production knowledge is desired but not required. Applications can be obtained through the museum beginning August 15.

From October 2-5, 2010, Bishop Museum will be the proud host of the

2010 Association of Science & Technology Centers (ASTC) Annual Conference. The conference brings over 250 science centers from throughout the world together to discuss relevant challenges, share unique concepts, experience ground-breaking techniques and technology, network with colleagues and much more. It will include over 100 sessions, fascinating speakers and special pre- and post-conference tour opportunities. We need 300 "Aloha Ambassadors" from October 1 - 5, 2010, to assist Bishop Museum staff and ASTC conference attendees at the Hawaii Convention Center.

Volunteer with Animal-Assisted Therapy

BC's Therapeutic Horseback Riding program is dedicated solely to helping children with disabilities. Offered each Monday & Tuesday by appointment, disabled children receive personal instruction on horseback to meet therapeutic goals and activities. Each rider is assisted by a team of 3 volunteers and our very experienced instructor and Director of the program, Marianne Sharp. The Pet Therapy program visits over 400 patients monthly utilizing small therapy animals (dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, ducks & chickens) for visitation & therapy. It also offers an unpaid internship for students to learn about the field of Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) & Animal Assisted-Activities (AAA) in the clinical environment. Animal-Assisted Therapy & Animal Ed Director - Dr. Shannon Dominguez, DCH. Volunteers are needed for all of our therapy programs, without volunteer assistance we would not be able to provide our services.
